Our packaging is made from plant-based materials—cassava, wood pulp, and beetroot—that protect product quality while being completely compostable.

 

 

 

Commercial and Home Compostable 

Our compostable film meets ASTM D6400 standards, certified for both industrial and home composting, offering strong barriers against moisture, light, and oxygen for freshness.

 

Does this compostable material protect the quality of the product inside?

Yes! When stored properly, JostArriba’s packaging remains stable on your shelf. Under composting conditions, it breaks down within 180 days at home, or 90 days in an industrial facility, leaving no trace or toxic residue.

 

 

Will JostArriba compostable packaging break down on the shelf or during storage?

Nope!  It is shelf-stable when stored in a dry, room-temperature environment and will not biodegrade.  It will only decompose under compost conditions: high heat, humidity, microorganisms, etc.

 

How long does it take for it to decompose? 

• With an Electric Kitchen Composter such as the Lomi device, it takes approximately 6 hours to fully break down.  
• Industrial (commercial) compostables: break down in 90 days
• Home ( backyard) compostable: break down in 180 days.

 

 

Why “compostable”, not “biodegradable”?

The term ‘biodegradable’ is a vague term that represents a process, but it is not necessarily under what conditions or time frame a product will disintegrate and degrade.

 

When packaging is labeled ‘compostable’, you can be sure that it will disintegrate within 180 days, at most, under compost conditions. It is similar to the way food and garden waste is broken down by microorganisms and disintegrates, and leaves no toxic residues.

 

Why compostable over recyclable?

Only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled due to contamination, with most ending up in landfills where it can take decades to decompose. Compostable packaging, on the other hand, nourishes the soil after decomposing, making it the best sustainable option.

Is the compostable packaging Land or Marine degradable?

It is land-degradable.

The primary component that breaks down our compostable materials on land is the microbes inherent in composting conditions. These microbes 'eat' and digest our compostable materials made from land-born plants like corn, beetroot, cassava, and wood pulp.

The microbes in marine environments have not adapted to eat those types of plants and therefore will not break down our materials.  

So please help us protect our oceans and refrain from damaging our oceans with trash, including the packaging of our products!
